THE RENAISSANCE OF MALTA

In 1530, Charles V, German Emperor and King of Spain, offered Malta to the Knights of St John of Jerusalem. This order is named after the Order of Malta.

In 1565 it is the Great Siege of Malta. It was at this moment that the Order won the battle against the Ottomans who forced them to flee the island.

On May 19, 1565, the Turkish Mustapha Pacha landed on Malta with 40,000 men. With a fierce desire to protect the island, the Order, headed by a certain Jean Parisot de la Valette, won the Battle of the Grand Siege on September 13, forcing the Ottomans to give up any chance of conquest.

It is between 1566 and 1571 that the new capital is built, closer to the sea this time. This one will bear the name of the grand master of the Knights of the Order: Jean Parisot of Valletta.
